Commissioning a portrait can be a fitting and timely way to commemorate, celebrate and remember the people in our lives. From the children that grow up quickly to our esteemed leaders and colleagues.

More than images, a commissioned portrait is a meaningful remembrance of a person or a moment in time.

As a portrait artist I endeavour to make the commissioning process as simple and straight forward as possible. Below I’ve listed the general outline of my process.

  1. Informal consultation. This could be in person or via phone or email. During the meeting we discuss general ideas and establish an outline for the Project.

  2. First sitting. Depending on the complexity of the painting either one or two sitting could be arranged. A single portrait of a head would usually require one sitting, whilst a composition involving a figure or figures in a larger scene might require a second sitting, the first for collecting visual ideas and the second to refine the idea and create specific reference material such as photographs and drawings.

  3. Painting. Once the project outline has been established and specific reference images agreed Im able to organise materials and begin the painting process.

  4. Client review. The final stage of the commission is an informal review at my studio to confirm the completion of our project. During this time the client is able to request adjustments or alterations if necessary.
